I’ve been playing pretty well this year. My nine-hole handicap is down to a three (3). I was feeling good about that until this past Thursday. How things can change! I shot my worst score of the summer. I totally duffed two tee shots. I shanked a fairway shot. Luckily it hit a tree and bounced back into play. It was borderline embarassing. I was humbled. I had three double bogeys on my way to a 44. Uggh!

I did manage to pull off one good shot. On hole #4, a par 3, I hit my tee shot to within 2 feet of the hole. I tapped in for birdie. I guess it could have been worse!

Have you been humbled lately?

This weekend my family traveled to Defiance, Ohio to visit my Dad and his wife. One of the cool things about being at their house was cable TV. We don’t have that. That meant I got to watch the NFL Draft on ESPN Saturday and Sunday. I didn’t watch all of it (20+ hours total), but I did pay special attention to the Cleveland Browns picks. I’m a Browns fan going all the way back to Brian Sipe and the Kardiac Kids. There have been a lot of heartbreaking losses (e.g. The Drive, The Fumble), but I’ve hung in there. After “The Draft” this past weekend, I’m optimistic the Browns have turned a corner. I like the Joe Thomas pick. They really didn’t have much of a choice given the condition of their offensive line. Trading up to get Brady Quinn was good too. However, I would have been happy if they had selected another offensive lineman like Joe Staley or Ben Grubbs. In my opinion the game is won or lost upfront (i.e. offensive and defensive line). I think if you gave Charlie Frye time in the pocket, he would be a good quarterback. Add to that a good running game, which again begins upfront, and Frye is even better. With that said, selecting Quinn brings more excitement. Drafting two offensive lineman in the first round would have been pretty boring. Overall I’m pleased with the Browns selections and I’m excited for football season to start. Go Browns!

What are your thoughts? Any football fans out there?
